5 Tips to Help You to Stay Motivated and Learn Coding

We all know motivation is hard to come by, especially when you are trying to self-learn. The technology field is vast and constantly changing, making it easy to lose motivation to begin.

But here are some tips that may help get you motivated and stay ahead of the game.

1. Assign 10 minutes each day to learning

You may be asking: “Only 10 minutes? That doesn’t seem very long.” And it isn’t! That’s the beauty of it. On days where you lack motivation, you only need to do 10 minutes. However, that doesn’t mean that once you are done the 10 minutes, you must stop. Started an interesting tutorial on a project you’re interested in? Keep going! The trick is to fool yourself into getting started. Once you have that momentum, keep learning!

2. Write down specific tasks

It’s a good idea to keep track of topics you want to learn. However, how you write down your tasks can actually demotivate you more. If your checklist includes “learn JavaScript”, that can feel overwhelming. Where do you begin? What is considered 100% learned? Instead, try to break down each topic for each day. For example, spend a day or two learning the syntax before jumping into the logic. Once those are done, consider starting one project at a time.

3. Consistency

Remember to set aside a time of day dedicated to learning. It’s easy to get swept up in the business of the day and forget about learning, especially when you have no due dates for assignments or teachers to report to. Figure out which time of the day bests works for you and stick to it.

4. Focus on one thing

Whether it be a new language, framework or library, pick one and focus on that one. It is easy to be drawn to so many different things, but the more your focus is spread thin, the harder it will be to learn and master any of it. If you don’t know where to begin, it is okay to do some research and figure out which best suits your end goal. After that, focus on one thing.

5. Enjoy the learning process

You may hear this a lot from seasoned developers and wonder why anyone would enjoy the struggle. It is through this learning process that your brain begins to shift its thinking style. It will take time and it will be hard, but if you try to enjoy the process, it will make the learning a lot easier. Go easy on yourself and don’t give up!
